Description

Vitrano et al reported three scores for evaluating a patient with a thalassemia syndrome. One score evaluates a patient with a transfusion-dependent phenotype. The authors are from multiple institutions in Italy, Iran, Egypt, Pakistan, Oman, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.

Patient selection: transfusion-dependent thalassemia

Outcome: one or more complications

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) hemoglobin (in g/L in the paper, but may be g/dL)

(3) serum AST in IU/L

(4) serum ALT in IU/L

(5) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in percent (from 0 to 100)
