A patient with the overactive bladder syndrome (OABS) often must deal with other problems that can make management difficult.
Comorbid conditions associated with OABS:
(1) increased risk of falls and fractures
(2) urinary tract infection (UTI)
(3) skin infections
(4) sleep disturbances (may contribute to nocturia)
(5) depression and/or anxiety (with fear of not being near a bathroom)
(6) frailty
Therapy with an antimuscarinic agent can result in anticholinergic side effects:
(1) confusion or agitation
(2) constipation
(3) inability to sweat
(4) dry mouth
(5) blurred vision (which may contribute to falls)
Impact of these conditions:
(1) poor quality of life
(2) poor self-image
(3) disability, including restrictions on travel and social activities
