Description

The Common Toxicity Criteria (CTC) define adverse events following cancer therapy. It was designed for use in clinical trials of different therapeutic regimens. It can be used to grade adverse effects affecting the eyes and vision.

Types of auditory or hearing adverse events:

(1) cataract

(2) conjunctivitis

(3) dry eye

(4) glaucoma

(5) keratitis (corneal inflammation with/without corneal ulceration)

(6) tearing (watery eyes)

(7) blurred vision

(8) double vision (diplopia)

(9) flashing lights, floaters

(10) night blindness (nyctalopia)

(11) photophobia

(12) other ocular or visual disturbance

Grade 0: normal or no change

Type of Adverse Event

Finding

Grade

cataract

asymptomatic

1

partial visual loss

2

visual loss requiring treatment or interfering with function

3

conjunctivitis

abnormal ophthalmologic changes but asymptomatic

1

symptomatic without visual impairment

1

interferes with function but does not interfere with activities of daily living

2

interferes with activities of daily living

3

dry eye

mild, not requiring treatment

1

moderate or requiring artificial tears

2

glaucoma

increase in intraocular pressure but no visual loss

1

increase in intraocular pressure with retinal changes

visual impairment
