Adverse reaction at a vaccine site can be classified based on functional impact, similar to that NCI Common Toxicity Criteria (CTC) for Adverse Events (AE).
Types of local reactions:
(1) pain (discomfort felt at rest)
(2) tenderness (discomfort felt to movement or palpation)
(3) pruritis at vaccination site
(4) swelling
(5) rash/lesion
(6) adhesive reaction (reaction to adhesive overlay or other device to secure vaccine-impregnated materials against the skin surface)
Adverse Reaction
Impact on Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Grade
barely perceptible
none
1 (mild)
does not interfere with ADL but requires modification in performance
2 (moderate)
significant
interferes with basic ADL
3 (severe)
life-threatening
prevents ADL
4 (life-threatening)
death
5 (fatal)
