Description

Baumann et al used the qSOFA score in conjunction with the serum lactate concentration to evaluate patients with sepsis in the Emergency Department (ED). This can help to identify a patient at increased risk for the need for intensive care. The authors are from Rowan University, University of Pennsylvania, University of California San Francisco and the Sutter Eden Medical Center.

Patient selection: age >= 18 years with suspected sepsis in the Emergency Department

Parameters within 6 hours of ED presentation:

(1) qSOFA (from 0 to 3)

(2) serum lactate concentration in mmol/L

The rule with the maximum sensitivity (94%) was EITHER qSOFA >= 1 OR lactate >= 2 mmol/L.

The specificity was 38% (high false positive) and negative predictive value 97%.
