Description

Someone who has been a solder may develop the combat action syndrome which involves acting out the combat experience.


 

Synonym: action addiction syndrome

 

Features:

(1) It occurs in a current or former soldier.

(2) The person repeatedly engages in a violent and aggressive manner.

(3) The person repeatedly engages in dangerous and risky behaviors that provide a thrill or "rush".

(4) The person's goal is to re-experience feelings and thoughts and to behave in ways reminiscent of previous combat experience.

(5) The affected person often has the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

 

The person may experience a number of negative feelings (loneliness, anger, fear, etc) prior to engaging in a violent or risky behavior. The behavior is followed by a brief period of pleasure, calmness or release that the person keeps trying to re-experience.
