Colestimide is an anion-exchange resin that has a number of effects after oral ingestion.
Effects of colestimide therapy:
(1) bile acid sequestration (capacity greater than cholestyramine)
(2) reduction of serum cholesterol in patients with hypercholesterolemia
(3) glucose-lowering (hypoglycemic) effect in type 2 patients with obesity
(4) improvement in metabolic status in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Effects on chemicals and toxins:
(1) reduced absorption of methotrexate
(2) reduction in polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)
