Description

A person may find exposure to cold unpleasant if one or more conditions are present.


 

Synonym: cold sensitivity

 

The reasons why the person finds the cold intolerable may be local or systemic.

 

Conditions associated with cold intolerance:

(1) lack of acclimatization

(2) psychological (including depression)

(3) hypothyroidism, including hypopituitarism

(4) anemia, especially with hemorrhagic shock

(5) malnutrition

(6) cryoglobulinemia or cryofibrinogenemia

(7) peripheral vascular disease

(8) angina (associated with reduced exercise capacity in the cold)

(9) vasospastic disorder or Raynaud’s phenomenon

(10) reflex sympathetic dystrophy, causalgia, post-polio syndrome or other disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system

(11) damage to thermoregulatory centers or pathways in the brain (hypothalamus, midbrain, medulla oblongata)

(12) drugs that affect the GABA receptor (baclofen, gamma-butyrolactone, gamma-hydroxybutyrate, cannabinoids, opioids)
