Description

Gervaz et al developed a score for predicting surgical site infection after a colorectal resection. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Geneva University Hospital, Central Institute of the Valais Hospitals and Clinique de La Colline in Switzerland.

Patient selection: colorectal resection, ASA grades I to IV

Parameters:

(1) wound contamination class (C)

(2) obesity (O, BMO > 30 kg per square meter)

(3) type of laparotomy (L)

(4) ASA Grade (A)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 4

• The higher the score the greater the risk for an SSI.
