Description

Ljungman et al listed criteria for the diagnosis of recurrent infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV). The infection may represent reinfection or reactivation of a latent infection. The authors are Huddinge University Hospital (Stockholm), Royal Free and University College Medical School (London) and the Mayo Clinic (Rochester).


 

Criteria for recurrent CMV infection - all of the following:

(1) presence of documented CMV infection

(2) clinical recovery

(3) no virus detected by active surveillance using reliable methods for >= 4 weeks

(4) presence of clinical findings with new detection of CMV

Differential diagnosis:

(1) passive transfer of anti-CMV antibodies

(2) persistent CMV infection (never cleared)
