Chopard et al reported a clinical thrombosis risk score for an acutely-ill medical patient. This can help to identify a patient who may require thromboprophylaxis. The authors are from Geneva University Hospital.
Patient selection: acutely-ill medical patient
Parameters scored 2 points if present:
(1) cardiac failure
(2) respiratory failure
(3) recent stroke
(4) recent myocardial infarction
(5) acute infectious disease
(6) acute rheumatic disease
(7) malignancy
(8) myeloproliferative syndrome
(9) nephrotic syndrome
(10) history of venous thrombembolism
(11) known hypercoagulable state
Parameters scored 1 point if present:
(12) immobilization (less than 30 minutes of walking per day)

total score =
= SUM(points for all 19 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 30
• A score >= 3 is an indication for thromboprophylaxis.
