Compression of the third cervical nerve root and ganglion may be associated with a number of clinical findings.
Features of compressing the third cervical (C3) nerve root and ganglion:
(1) radiating pain, dysesthesias (abnormal or unpleasant sensations) and numbness in the C3 pain dermatome (see below)
(2) presence of compression on the nerve root and/or ganglion
(3) relief of compression results in relief of symptoms
C3 pain dermatome:
(1) scalp area over and behind the ear
(2) the pinna
(3) the angle of the mandible
