Description

Taniguchi et al used the Clinical Score Prediction (CSP) score to stage a gastric cancer prior to surgery. Staging prior to surgery can help with treatment planning including preoperative chemotherapy. The authors are from Tokyo Women's Medical University.

Patient selection: gastric cancer

Parameters:

(1) serum CEA concentration

(2) tumor diameter in mm

(3) circumferential involvement

(4) extension into esophagus

(5) histology

(6) macroscopic type (from 0 to 4; based on Japanese classification)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -7

• maximum score: 32

• A score < 17 is associated with Stage I or II disease.

• A score >= 17 is associated with Stage III or IV disease.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.94.
