An allergic reaction to food may range from minor to life-threatening. The nature of clinical response may indicate the severity of the reaction.
Mild:
(1) localized urticaria
(2) pruritis
(3) localized edema
(4) rhinitis
Moderate:
(1) generalized urticaria
(2) angioedema
(3) facial swelling
(4) throat tightening or laryngeal edema
(5) breathing difficulty (other than wheezing)
Severe:
(1) severe respiratory symptoms, including wheezing, cyanosis, retractions or respiratory distress
(2) collapse or faint
(3) hypotension
Overall severity is assigned on the basis of the most severe reaction recorded.
