Description

Wu et al developed a scoring to describe the clinical severity of fungal keratitis. While developed for the experimental mouse model it can also be used for clinical keratomycosis. The authors are from the Cullen Eye Institute and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Parameters:

(1) area of corneal opacity

(2) density of corneal opacity

(3) surface regularity

2

uniform opacity (outline of iris and pupil not discernible)

normal (regular without no surface irregularity)

1

rough surface, some swelling

2

significant swelling, crater or serious descemetocele formation

3

perforation or descemetocele

where:

• Descemetocele = herniation of Descemet's membrane (lamina limitans posterior corneae.

• The scoring of a descemetocele under surface regularity is a little ambiguous.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0 (normal)

• maximum score: 12

• The higher the score the more severe the infection and damage to the cornea.
