The prognosis in meningococcal disease can be predicted by considering a few clinical findings.

(1) preadmission antibiotics

(2) age of patient in years

(3) focal neurologic signs

(4) hemorrhagic diathesis

where:

• focal neurological signs = motor, sensory or cranial nerve disturbances of central origin that were not present before the episode of meningococcal disease

• hemorrhagic diathesis = spontaneous, clinically apparent bleeding, including bleeding from wounds, hematoma, hematuria, spontaneous gingival bleeding, epistaxis, gastrointestinal bleeding or gynecologic bleeding, together with ecchymosis or hemorrhage in the places of puncture (venous or arterial access, intramuscular injection, lumbar puncture, other.
