Description

Wang et al developed a simple clinical rule for when to perform emergent endoscopy in a patient with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB). This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University in Suzhou, China.


Patient selection: nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding

 

Indications for emergent endoscopy - one or more of the following:

(1) red hematemesis

(2) shock

(3) red stool

(4) hemoglobin <= 75 g/L

 

Indicators of high-risk NVUGIB:

(1) red hematemesis

(2) shock

(3) red stool

(4) hemoglobin <= 75 g/L

(5) urea >= 8.5 mmol/L
