Description

Ma et al developed a clinical rule for predicting antibiotic-resistant bacterial pneumonia in an older Chinese patient. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive antibiotic therapy. The authors are from Prince of Wales Hospital and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Patient selection: older Chinese adult (>= 65 years) with pneumonia

Parameters:

(1) bronchiectasis

(2) recent hospitalization

(3) severe pneumonia

(4) other risk factors (nursing home residence, home infusion therapy, chronic wound care, chronic dialysis, immunosuppression)

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.75 in the derivation cohort.

• The sensitivity in the derivation cohort for a cutoff >= 2.5 was 77% and specificity 64^%.
