Description

Ren et al reported models for predicting dementia for an adult. These can help to identify a patient who may require an intervention to reduce the risk. The authors are from Shenshen Kangning Hospital, University of Macau, Anhui Medical University and Nanchang University in China.

Patient selection: adult age 35 to 73

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) educational level

(3) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter

(4) smoking

(5) frequency of alcohol consumption

(6) employment status

(7) early awakening

(8) sleepiness

(9) insomnia

(10) cardiovascular disease

(11) respiratory disease

(12) cerebrovascular disease

(13) diabetes

(14) hypertension

total score =

= SUM(points for all of the parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -17 (in the paper it says -18 was achieved in males)

• maximum score: 30

• The higher the score the greater the risk of dementia.
