Description

Nanda et al reported a score for the use of surfactant in a preterm neonate with the respiratory distress syndrome. The authors are from multiple institutions in India.

Patient selection: preterm neonate with respiratory distress, from 26 to < 35 weeks

Parameters:

(1) gestational age in weeks

(2) antenatal steroid therapy

(3) Apgar score at 1 minute

(4) hypothermia on admission

(5) Silverman score at 2 hours, from 0 to 10

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 7

A score >= 4 was associated with surfactant administration.

value of X =

= (1.20922 * (score)) - 3.492112

probability of surfactant therapy =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))
