Description

Constans et al developed a score for predicting lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in a symptomatic hospitalized patient. This can help to guide subsequent testing of the patient. The authors are from Hopital Saint-Andre and Universite Victor Segalen Bordeaux II in Bordeaux, France.

Patient selection: hospitalized patient who is clinically suspected of having a DVT of a lower extremity

Parameters:

(1) current cancer

(2) paralysis or plaster (cast) = immobilization

(3) pittng edema affecting only one lower limb

(4) superficial venous dilation

(5) warmth

(6) other diagnosis that can explain findings

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -1

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the greater the risk for a deep vein thrombosis.
