Hohl et al reported a clinical prediction rule for identifying a patient in the Emergency Department who may have an adverse drug effect. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada.
Patient selection: Emergency Department
High risk for adverse drug effect - all of the following:
(1) medications taken within the past 2 weeks
(2) one or more pre-existing medical problems OR taken antibiotics in past 7 days
(3) age >= 80 years of age OR a change to medications in the past 28 days
A patient who is not at high risk is considered low risk.
Performance at identifying a patient with an adverse drug effect:
• The sensitivity is 91%
• The specificity is 38%.
• The negative predictive value is 97%.
