Description

The clinical features of appendicitis in a young child may be atypical, resulting in misdiagnosis. Feng et al reported a model for diagnosing complicated appendicitis in a child under 5 years of age. The authors are from Tianjin Children's Hospital in China.

Patient selection: age less than 5 years of age

Complicated appendicitis: gangrenous appendicitis, intra-abdominal abscess, appendiceal phlegmone

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) white blood cell count in 10^9/L

(3) duration of symptoms in hours

Parameter

Points

age in years

-1.559 * (age)

WBC in 10^9/L

0.19 * (WBC)

duration of symptoms

0.01 * (hours)

X =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters) + 2.997

probability of complicated appendicitis =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve is 0.881.
