Description

Patients with rhabdomyosarcoma may be classified based on the extent of disease at initial presentation and surgery.

Clinical Findings

Group

localized disease, completely resected, regional nodes not involved

• confined to muscle or organ of origin

• contiguous involvement with infiltration outside the muscle or organ of origin, as through fascial planes

I

grossly resected tumor with microscopic residual disease

• no evidence of gross residual disease and no evidence of regional lymph node involvement

regional disease, completely resected; regional lymph nodes involved, or extension of tumor into adjacent organ, or both; all tumor completely resected with no microscopic residual disease

regional disease with involved lymph nodes, grossly resected, but with evidence of microscopic residual disease

II

incomplete resection with gross residual disease

III

distant metastatic disease present at onset (lung, liver, bones, bone marrow, brain, distant muscle, distant lymph nodes)
