Description

Wong et al listed a number of “warning signs” indicating the presence of actinomycosis. The authors are from Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and Addenbrooke’s Hospital at Cambridge in England.

Actinomycosis is typically associated with:

(1) a chronic condition with indolent clinical course

(2) the presence of a mass-like effect

(3) the presence of sinus tracts that may resolve and recur

(4) dissection through various tissue planes

(5) a history of intermittent courses of antibiotics and persistent infection

Actinomycosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of any chronic infection or mass lesion.
