Singh and Toskes listed clinical findings associated with small bowel bacterial overgrowth. The authors are from the University of Florida in Gainesville.


General symptoms associated with bacterial overgrowth may include:

(1) bloating

(2) abdominal discomfort

(3) diarrhea

(4) weight loss

(5) weakness

(6) malnutrition

(7) steatorrhea

(8) variable edema

 

Findings associated with malabsorption:

(1) neuropathy (vitamin B12, vitamin E)

(2) night blindness (vitamin A)

(3) xerophthalmia (vitamin A)

(4) osteomalacia (vitamin D)

(5) bleeding (vitamin K)

 

Laboratory findings

(1) hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia

(2) anemia (microcytic with iron malabsorption, macrocytic with vitamin B12 malabsorption)

(3) hypocalcemia (vitamin D deficiency)
