Description

Pynnonnen et al listed clinical findings that may indicate an underlying malignancy in an adult with a neck mass. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from a more aggressive workup.  The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States.


Patient selection: adult with a neck mass

 

Findings that may be associated with underlying malignancy in an adult with a neck mass:

(1) age > 40 years

(2) history of tobacco use

(3) history of alcohol abuse

(4) pharyngitis

(5) dysphagia

(6) otalgia and/or hearing loss ipsilateral to the neck mass

(7) ulcer in the oral cavity or oropharynx

(8) recent voice change

(9) nasal obstruction and/or bleeding ipsilateral to the neck mass

(10) unexplained weight loss

(11) history of head and neck malignancy

(12) tonsil asymmetry

(13) skin lesion on face, neck or scalp
