Description

Mehr et al reported clinical findings associated with radiographic pneumonia in a nursing home resident. The presentation of pneumonia in a nursing home resident may be subtle with few symptoms. The authors are from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Washington University, and Boston University.


Clinical findings associated with pneumonia:

(1) tachycardia

(2) respiratory rate >= 30 breaths per minute

(3) temperature >= 38°C

(4) somnolence or decreased alertness

(5) acute onset of confusion

(6) lung crackles on auscultation

(7) absence of wheezes

(8) increased white blood cell count
