Description

Kjetland et al identified clinical findings in Zimbabwean women with genital infections caused by Schistosoma haematobium. This can help identify women who may benefit from additional diagnostic studies. The authors are from multiple institutions in Zimbabwe, Norway and Denmark.

Clinical findings diagnostic of genital schistosomiasis:

(1) grainy sandy patches (previously described by Smith and Christie to be present in the urinary bladder in patients with Schistosoma haematobium infections, with the grains probably representing calcified schistosomal eggs)

(2) demonstration of schistosomal eggs in Pap smear, wet mount, and/or tissue biopsy

Additional clinical findings suggestive of but not diagnostic for genital schistosomiasis:

(1) yellow sandy patches

(2) mucosal bleeding

(3) abnormal blood vessels

Other conditions causing these findings include syphilis, herpes simplex virus, and dysplasia.
