Hollaar et al reported clinical findings associated with aspiration pneumonia in a nursing home resident. The authors are from HAN University of Applied Sciences (Nijmegen) and the Flemish-Netherlands Geriatric Oral Research Group (Ghent).
Patient selection: nursing home resident
Diagnosis of nursing home aspiration pneumonia (NHAP):
(1) presence of pneumonia
(2) presence of risk factors:
(2a) dysphagia
(2b) choking incident
(2c) nasogastric or orogastric tube feedings
(2d) neurological disease
(2e) cognitive impairment
Clinical diagnosis of pneumonia (at least 2 of the following):
(1) fever (> 38°C)
(2) deterioration in general function
(3) tachypnea
(4) crepitation with auscultation
(5) dyspnea
