Balantidium coli most often affects the gastrointestinal tract.
Clinical findings may range from an asymptomatic carrier state to fulminant disease.
Clinical findings may include:
(1) diarrhea, which may be mucoid and bloody in severe disease
(2) abdominal cramping
(3) abdominal pain
(4) halitosis
(5) weight loss
(6) tenesmus
Complications:
(1) bowel perforation
(2) gastrointestinal bleeding
(3) sepsis
