Tryptamines are a group of synthetic compounds related to psilocybin. These share structural similarities with serotonin.
Chemical group: indolealkylamines
Derivatives with pharmacologic activity: ethylamine substitutions or indole ring structures
Tryptamines include the following (with side chains in parentheses):
(1) AMT (N,N-alpha-methyl)
(2) 5-MeO-AMT (5-methoxy-N,N-alpha)
(3) DPT (N,N-dipropyl)
(4) 5-MeO-DIPT (5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyl)
(5) 5-MeO-DPT (5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyl)
Desirable effects:
(1) euphoria
(2) feelings of empathy
(3) hallucinations
Undesirable psychological effects:
(1) auditory hallucinations
(2) visual hallucinations
(3) emotional distress
(4) agitation
(5) confusion
Undesirable physiologic effects:
(1) nausea and vomiting
(2) diarrhea
(3) hypertension
(4) tachycardia
(5) diaphoresis (sweating)
(6) salivation
(7) dystonia
(8) mydriasis
(9) tremors
(10) seizures
Rare effects:
(1) catalepsy
(2) paralysis
(3) rhabdomyolysis
A user may take an MAO inhibitor to increase oral bioavailability, which increases the risk for a drug interaction.
