Description

Ancylostoma duodenale can cause a severe infection in infants. Most cases have been reported from China and Southeast Asia.


 

Possible means of transmission to the infant:

(1) transmammary during breast feeding

(2) laying child on contaminated soil

(3) possibly transplacental transfer

(4) infected diapers

 

Clinical features:

(1) diarrhea

(2) signs of acute GI hemorrhage

(2a) bloody stools

(2b) melena

(2c) massive hemorrhage

(3) anorexia and vomiting

(4) iron deficiency anemia with pallor

(5) failure to thrive

(6) hookworm larvae in stools

 

If untreated the infection can be fatal.
