Description

Acute exposure to tellurium can result in a number of clinical findings.


 

Signs and symptoms of acute tellurium poisoning:

(1) nausea and vomiting

(2) garlic odor on breath, sweat and urine

(3) black discoloration of tongue, lips, and oral mucosa

(4) anorexia with metallic taste in mouth

(5) headache

(6) variable alopecia

 

If the tellurium solution contains hydrochloric or other acid, then ingestion may cause corrosive burns to the mouth and esophagus.

 

In severe intoxications the patient may develop:

(1) respiratory depression and apnea

(2) circulatory collapse

(3) coma

 

The diagnosis of acute tellurium poisoning is confirmed by chemical analysis of blood and the material ingested or inhaled.
