Description

A patient with early paragonimiasis may develop acute symptoms as the infective metacercariae invade the intestinal wall and migrate through the host.

Timing: from 1 day up to 2 months after the ingestion

The number of infecting metacercariae may influence how symptomatic that patient is.

Clinical features of early stage paragonimiasis:

(1) variable fever (often absent)

(2) fatigue and malaise

(3) abdominal pain with or without diarrhea

(4) urticaria

(5) pleuritic chest pain with or without a pleural effusion

(6) variable pneumothorax

(7) variable lymphadenopathy

Laboratory findings may include:

(1) eosinophilia

A significant percentage of patients may be asymptomatic or have minor symptoms during the acute phase.
