Description

A patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) may present with a number of clinical findings.


 

Synonym: mucinous ascites

 

Clinical features:

(1) ascites with abdominal distention

(2) mechanical bowel obstruction

(3) malnutrition

(4) dyspnea secondary to intra-abdominal fluid accumulation

(5) abdominal pain

(6) hernia

 

The peritoneal fluid is thick and appears mucinous and/or gelatinous.

 

The time course and survival for the patient varies depending on the underlying cause.
