The clinical picture seen in a patient with papilledema varies with the cause. However, a number of findings are relatively nonspecific. Sometimes the patient may be asymptomatic.
Common mechanism: increased intracranial pressure
Clinical findings may include:
(1) headache
(2) nausea and vomiting
(3) pulsatile tinnitus
(4) current drug history positive for a drug causing raised intracranial pressure
Visual acuity may be preserved. The patient may complain of:
(1) diplopia
(2) blurry vision
(3) constriction of the visual field
(4) decreased color perception
(5) flickering lights
(6) graying-out of vision
