4-methyltioamphetemine (4-MTA) is an emerging drug of abuse with an effect similar to ectasy (MDMA). It is a serotonergic agent that increases release, blocks reuptake and inhibits metabolism of serotonin.
Desired effects:
(1) stimulation
(2) euphoria
Overdosage can result in the serotonin syndrome (see Chapter 18) with:
(1) agitation and restlessness
(2) muscle twitches and involuntary contractions (myoclonus)
(3) diaphoresis (sweating)
(4) uncontrollable shivering
(5) hyperreflexia (exaggerated reflex responses)
(6) tremors
(7) diarrhea
(8) incoordination
(9) fever and hyperthermia
(10) convulsions
(11) confusion and hypomania
(12) coma
(13) death
Other adverse effects include:
(1) psychosis
