Exposure to an elevated concentration of ozone can result in a number of clinical findings. Ozone is water soluble and a strong oxidizing agent. It primarily affects the upper respiratory tract.
Clinical findings of acute exposure:
(1) headache
(2) burning sensation in the eyes with lacrimation
(3) acrid taste
(4) burning and/or dry throat
(5) nonproductive cough
(6) substernal discomfort or chest tightness
(7) bronchitis with bronchial hyperreactivity
(8) fatigue
A severe exposure can result in:
(1) dyspnea
(2) cyanosis
(3) pulmonary edema
(4) acute respiratory failure
