Clinical Findings Association with Bromazolam and Flubromazolam Intoxication

Description

Bromazolam and flubromazolam are designer triazobenzodiazepenines that were developed but never brought to market. They are being synthesized and distributed illegally in several countries around the world. It is listed as a controlled substance in some countries but not yet in others.

The drugs may be added to other drugs or distributed as another benzodiazepine, such as alprazolam.

The drugs cause sedation as expected for a benzodiazepine.

At higher doses a patient may develop:

(1) coma

(2) respiratory failure

(3) hypotension

(4) hypotonia

(5) rhabdomyolysis

(6) bradycardia or tachycardia

(7) amnesia

The drugs have also been associated with the following for unanticipated reasons:

(1) hyperthermia

(2) seizures, including refractory status epilepticus

(3) acute myocardial injury

These complications may be related to the presence of contaminants.

These drugs may be abused alone or in conjunction with other drugs.

Flumazenil can be used to reverse some of the effects.
