Description

A pulmonary arteriovenous malformation may be associated with a number of clinical findings.


Patient selection: pulmonary arteriovenous shunt (PAVM)

 

Clinical findings in PAVM may include:

(1) hypoxemia secondary to right-to-left shunt

(2) high output heart failure

(3) paradoxical emboli (stroke, myocardial infarction, etc)

(4) abscess formation (brain, peripheral, spine)

(5) hemoptysis

(6) hemothorax

(7) death during pregnancy

(8) severe migraines

(9) nosebleeds

 

Some patients with PAVM have hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), which may result in additional signs and symptoms.
