A papillary fibroelastoma is a rare benign tumor usually arising on a cardiac valve.
The tumor consists of:
(1) an endothelial-lined luminal surface
(2) myxomatous layer
(3) fibroelastic core
The tumors may be single or multiple. They usually arise from a cardiac valve but may arise from chordae or other structures.
On imaging studies it shows a spherical cap on thin pedicle resembling a pedunculated polyp ("sea anemone").
Complications:
(1) peripheral embolization with TIA/stroke, myocardial infarction or other manifestation
(2) outflow obstruction
Differential diagnosis:
(1) endocarditis-associated vegetation
(2) atrial myxoma
