The Tapia Syndrome is associated with involvement of cranial nerves X and XII. The motor nuclei and/or rootlets of the nerves are involved, resulting only in a motor deficit.

XII (hypoglossal)
ipsilateral paralysis and atrophy of the tongue
Usually only one side is affected although bilateral involvement may occur. The tongue will deviate to the affected (paralyzed) side.
