Description

Basidiobolomycosis may involve the skin and subcutaneous tissues following an inoculation of organisms. Most of the people who develop the infection are immunocompetent. The organism secretes several enzymes that aid its invasion.


 

Genus and species: Basidiobolus ranarum

Family: Entomophthoraceae

Class: Zygomycetes

 

Source of infection:

(1) insect bite

(2) cutaneous trauma involving decaying vegetation

(3) cutaneous trauma involving animal feces

 

Site of infection:

(1) foot

(2) arm or leg

(3) buttocks

(4) face

(5) trunk

 

Clinical features:

(1) fluctuant, firm and non-tender swellings

(2) draining abscesses

(3) pseudo-soft tissue tumor

 

Diagnosis is based on:

(1) granulomatous inflammation with fungal hyphae

(2) positive fungal culture

 

Itraconazole can be use to successfully treat the infection. Other antifungal agents (potassium iodide, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole) are also effective.
