Description

Ingesting the larvae of the cestode genus Spirometra can result in a number of signs and symptoms, depending on where the larvae are found. The ingested larva invades through the intestinal wall and then migrates to a variety of locations.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) history of drinking contaminated water or eating raw flesh of an infected creature

(2) eosinophilia

(3) tender nodules that may migrate

(3a) subcutaneous

(3b) central nervous system

(3c) pulmonary

(3d) bone

(3e) intraperitoneal

(4) complications secondary to the larval migrations

(4a) peritonitis

(4b) lymphatic obstruction with elephantiasis

(5) presence of a wormlike structure at the time of surgical removal
