Description

Sirenomelia ("siren limb") is a very rare congenital malformation that may represent a form of the caudal regression syndrome.


 

The condition tends to be more common in males (M:F ratio 3:1).

 

Clinical features may include combinations of the following:

(1) single or fused lower limb (required)

(2) renal malformation, including bilateral renal agenesis

(3) malformation of the urinary bladder, including agenesis

(4) agenesis of the external genitalia

(5) anorectal atresia

(6) partial or complete sacrococcygeal agenesis

(7) single umbilical artery

 

Olighydramnios is present in infants with bilateral renal agenesis.

 

Bilateral renal agenesis is incompatible with life.
