Pyrethroid compounds are used as insecticides.Pyrethrins are natural substances initially isolated from the flower heads of Chrysanthemum Cinerariaefolium. Commercial pyrethrins are mostly synthesized.
Types:
(1) Type I: cyclopropane carboxylic esters
(2) Type 2: alpha-cyano compounds
Mechanism: affects sodium (influx influx) and chloride (decreased) channels
Human toxicity is usually mild. Severe intoxications are usually associated with:
(1) occupational or agricultural accident
(2) suicidal ingestion
(3) co-ingestion with an organophosphorus compound
Clinical features:
(1) nausea and vomiting
(2) tremor
(3) paresthesias
(4) hypersalivation
(5) sore throat
(6) abdominal pain
(7) mouth ulcerations (after ingestion)
(8) headache
(9) dizziness
(10) seizures
(11) stupor or coma
(12) respiratory failure
(13) hypotension
(14) hyperlactatemia
