Description

Pseudomyxoma retroperitonei is similar to pseudomyxoma peritonei except that the mucinous fluid accumulates in the retroperitoneum. It is very rare.


 

Synonym: extraperitoneal pseudomyxoma

 

In most cases the cause is rupture of a retrocecal appendiceal cystadenoma. Rare cases may be associated with colon or ovarian cancers.

 

Clinical features:

(1) palpable abdominal mass

(2) abdominal, back or lumbar pain

(3) fever

 

Laboratory findings:

(1) elevated serum CEA

(2) elevated CA19-9

(3) aspiration of mucoid fluid from the retroperitoneum

 

The location of the pseudomyxoma can be determined on MRI.

 

Complications:

(1) cutaneous fistula
