Description

A person taking excessive amounts of iodide may develop iodism.


 

Clinical features of iodism:

(1) burning mouth

(2) increased salivation

(3) metallic taste

(4) soreness of gums and teeth

(5) headache

 

Other toxicities:

(1) Long-term intake can result in an acneiform eruption (iododerma).

(2) High doses of iodide can trigger heart failure in a patient with underlying heart disease.
