Description

Paracoccidioidomycosis may involve the gastrointestinal tract, either part of a systemic involvement or as the presenting complaint.


 

Routes of involvement:

(1) swallowed fungi over a long period of time

(2) hematogenous spread

 

Clinical findings:

(1) abdominal pain

(2) nausea and vomiting

(3) altered bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)

(4) fever

(5) anorexia often with weight loss

(6) bowel obstruction

(7) enterocolitis or proctocolitis with mucosal ulcerations

(8) appendicitis

(9) mesenteric lymphadenopathy

 

The diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis should be considered in a patient with an exposure history and one or more of these findings.
